I had always envied the Parisians of 28 December 1895. They were there at the arrival of cinema. In the current century, however, we are witnessing a second beginning of cinema-this time on the other side of the world. I think of Wang Bing as The Lumière and Apichatpong Weerasethakuhl as Méliès. In the past, cinemas in Asia were alternative, isolated islands but today the seem to function as a bridge of sorts between the past and future of film history.
